About Nearest Pump
The cheapest pump near you is often not the cheapest trip. Nearest Pump works out whether driving to a cheaper forecourt actually leaves you better off.
How it works
- Prices come from the UK government's Fuel Finder scheme, which forecourts report their prices to. We refresh them every 15 minutes.
- Distances are real road routes, worked out on our own routing server from OpenStreetMap, not straight lines. We check the routing server is answering before every search; if it isn't, the page says routing is offline rather than guessing.
- The sum: what you save on the litres you buy, minus what the extra miles cost you in fuel, wear (tyres, servicing, depreciation) and, if you choose, your time. It also tells you how many litres it takes for a detour to pay for itself.
- Just filling up finds the best pump near where you are. On a trip finds pumps on the way to where you're going, and counts only the detour off your route.
- Navigate opens directions in Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze, whichever you pick. On a trip it routes you to your destination via the pump where the app allows a stop (Google Maps, and Apple Maps on iOS 18.4 or later); Waze goes to the pump, and you add your destination after filling up.
- Loyalty cards you tick are counted as a small discount at that brand. If you give the range left on your dashboard, we won't suggest a pump you can't safely reach.
Prices can change after they were reported. The price on the forecourt sign is the one you pay. Results are estimates to help you decide, not a promise of savings.
Coverage is Great Britain. Northern Ireland postcodes, places and roads aren't covered yet. Nearest Pump is for petrol and diesel cars, not electric vehicles.
Install it as an app
On Android, use Install app at the bottom of the page (or Chrome's menu → Install app). On iPhone, tap Share → Add to Home Screen. It opens full-screen with its own icon and always shows live prices.

What we handle, why, and for how long
- Your searches. To work out an answer, the place you start from (and where you're going, on a trip) is sent to our server as map coordinates, along with your car settings. It's used for that answer and not stored by us. Cloudflare may keep a copy of a calculated route for up to an hour so the same route is quicker next time; it isn't linked to you. If you use "my location", your browser asks your permission first, and only the coordinates are sent. Your position is checked again each time you press Find pumps, and when you come back to the app with results on screen, so a search is always from where you are now.
- Our routing server receives the coordinates of the routes it calculates, from our own server only. It never sees your IP address and keeps no log of the routes.
- Counting results. For each search we record one anonymous outcome: whether chasing the cheaper pump was worth it, roughly how much it saved or cost, the fuel type and whether it was a trip. No location, no IP address and no identifier is recorded, so this isn't personal data. These totals are what "Burnham's metrics" shows.
- Your IP address is used briefly to stop abuse (limiting how many requests one connection can make, counted for about a minute) and to avoid counting the same search twice (a one-way hash, kept for 10 minutes, then discarded).
- On your device. Your car settings, your preferred maps app (if you choose to remember it) and your last start point and destination are remembered in your browser's local storage, so you don't have to type them again. They stay on your device; clearing your browser data removes them. If you install Nearest Pump as an app, your browser also keeps a copy of the site's own files (page, map icons, fonts) so it opens quickly. No prices, searches or locations are kept in that copy.
- If you email us, we keep your message only as long as needed to deal with it.
The legal basis is legitimate interests: giving you the answer you asked for, and keeping the service secure and affordable to run.
Who processes it for us
- Cloudflare hosts the site and protects it from attacks, under its own privacy policy. Its security systems may set a strictly necessary cookie if traffic looks automated.
- DigitalOcean runs our routing server, in London.
Both are US companies acting on our instructions under data processing agreements, which include the UK's approved safeguards for international transfers.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete personal data about you, or object to how it's used: email contact@paul.reviews. As we don't keep personal data beyond the 10 minutes above, there's usually nothing held, but we'll always answer. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
